LomiLomi – Hawaiian Massage

Heartworks Lomilomi is the Traditional Old Style Lomilomi massage.  It came from a powerful Kahuna on Maui and was brought to the world by Sherman Dudoit. In ancient times, the Hawaiians used crude weapons in battle and they also practiced a martial art called Lua, which focusses on bone breaking techniques, dance style movements, kicking and punching. They often dislocated joints, broke bones and generally were in need of healing which is where the Lomilomi comes in.  This form of Lomilomi was used to increase circulation, soften the muscles and prepare the body for the bone- setting (chiropractic style adjustments).

Heartworks Lomilomi uses the hands rather than the forearms as in other styles of Lomilomi. The massage helps to increase circulation of the blood and flushes the lymphatic fluids within various muscle groups.  The flowing strokes bring new fresh blood into the muscles, oxygenating the cells and sending healing nutrients into the organs of the body.

All Lomilomi is a heart-centred form of healing but with the Heartworks style the practitioner uses the hands as an extension of the heart, in long flowing strokes up and down the body, taking you to a deep quiet place inside yourself.  This meditative form of Lomilomi focusses on rhythm, pressure and breath.  The open-hearted presence of the giver allows the receiver to release deeply held tension and patterns.  Conscious breathing by both the giver and receiver nourishes the body at a cellular level, restoring balance, opening the heart, and creating a feeling of well-being and peace.

Aunty Margaret Style Lomilomi uses hands, forearms, and elbows to move around the table creating a healing and balancing experience for the body, mind and soul. This style differs from Heartworks in that forearms, elbows and knuckles are used as well as the hands. The long flowing strokes go from head to toes in a continuous, rhythmic movement described as feeling like gentle waves over the body.  Two parts of the body may be massaged at the same time for example one hand could be working the shoulder and the other the lower back or hip. This encourages the client to let go as their mind can’t keep up with the different areas of their body being massaged at the same time.  The long sweeping movements up and down the body connect the left and right sides of the brain, also allowing the client to let go if they choose to.

What to expect from a treatment

Traditionally Lomilomi is performed with the client completely undressed with a sarong or towel in place to cover your genitals and buttocks. Women have the option of having their breasts covered when they are face up.  This allows the full length of the body to be massaged.  Lomilomi is a holistic and spiritual massage and although this is a full body massage, your genitals are always covered and it is in no way a sexual massage.
